Summary

Our successful, long-established and research-led education and training is aimed at engineers and scientists wishing to improve the delivery of water supply and sanitation services internationally. The programme will be of value to those working anywhere in the world, but there is a focus on low-and middle-income countries.

The programme will enable you to improve your knowledge, expertise and skills in many aspects of sustainable water supply and sanitation infrastructure delivery and operation. Other topics studied may include flood, groundwater and piped system modelling, as well as water and wastewater treatment, to address the changing needs of the market. It also includes non-technical modules or sessions that broaden the knowledge base and prepare you for future higher managerial roles.

The programme comprises both compulsory modules covering all core aspects of water supply and sanitation engineering and optional modules which enable you to tailor the programme to meet your individual needs. There is also an individual research dissertation, which is linked to your specific interests and normally includes working with partner agencies around the world.

Comprehensive resources are available on the online learning environment for each module, including study guidance, highly illustrated unit notes, additional reading materials, ReVIEW Lecture Capture (recordings of class sessions from the equivalent and concurrently running full-time MSc course), YouTube clips of laboratory procedures and experimental setup, self-assessment questions and answers, and subject specific references and texts.

Module tutors and teaching staff are experts across a broad range of disciplines, with considerable experience of working internationally. Similarly, distance learning students may have a range of professional experiences. Module tutors and other teaching staff usually interact with individual learners through Skype and/or telephone, on a case-by-case basis. This interaction provides you with a stimulating learning experience.

Distance learning courses can be studied part-time and flexibly to fit with your employment commitments. The programme is designed to allow completion within the stated five-year maximum time period, by studying one module per semester.
