  • Examine key themes and debates shaping the concepts of security and security studies

  • Gain a solid academic grounding in criminology, terrorism and intelligence

The Security Studies programme introduces you to emerging paradigms within security studies, security and intelligence at local, national and global levels.

It explores what we mean by the concept of ‘security’ and analyses justifications for the increasing ‘securitisation’ of social life. The course provides an analysis of important security events and issues of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In addition, the programme connects the conceptual basis of the discipline to key practical issues facing the international system and to some of the emerging security threats and issues pertaining to law enforcement, government agencies and the private sector. These include a critical view of threats from terrorism, organised crime, radicalisation and intelligence failures.
