School of Materials

University of Manchester - School of MaterialsThe School is a leading international research school, employing over 90 academic staff, spanning seven research areas, and hosting industry-sponsored research centres in the areas of composites, energy materials, materials performance and materials imaging, providing a unique capability to process and analyse materials of all types. We have over 250 postgraduate research students and 125 Postdoctoral Research Assistants from a wide range of science, engineering and management backgrounds. Our postgraduate programmes are academically challenging and forward-thinking. Industry drives their content, and we invite many to work alongside us in our strategic development, ensuring that we retain our international standing as a centre of excellence and innovation in materials – and that our courses are designed with graduate employability in mind.

Materials are at the heart of the modern world and, as the largest single materials focus in Europe, we are at the forefront of developing the science behind them.

Wide-ranging research
At the School, we encompass a unique and exceptional breadth of research and training in materials – from polymers, textiles, metals and composites to nuclear science, aerospace technology and cutting-edge fashion and design management. These activities are built on our global reputation for excellence and award-winning research.

Industry support
We are supported by leading research councils and organisations worldwide, and many fund specialist centres in the School to focus on ground-breaking research topics. Specialist research centres include the Materials Performance Centre, the Aerospace Research Institute and the Northwest Composites Centre.

World-leaders
Our academics are world-leaders in their fields of research, and we are rated number one in the UK for Research Power in Materials Science, with 80% of our research rated as internationally excellent or world-leading in quality. Our substantial research income supports more than 250 research students and 125 postdoctoral research workers – in turn generating exciting and innovative research opportunities that span the breadth of materials.

The School is a leading international research school, employing over 90 academic staff and 125 postdoctoral research assistants. We have over 250 postgraduate research students from a wide range of science and engineering backgrounds and cover a breadth of materials from biomaterials and ceramics to nanomaterials, including graphene. The School’s close links with industry ensures that our research has a significant impact on society and commerce and the development of the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) and a world-leading centre of advanced materials and research commercialisation, the Sir Henry Royce Institute, at Manchester provides exciting research opportunities to exploit the full potential of new materials and tackle some of greatest challenges facing the planet.

Your options
As a postgraduate student, you have the opportunities to study at all postgraduate levels from taught Masters’ through to a range of  research degrees (PhD, EngD, MEnt, EntD, MSc by research and MPhil). Development of our programmes has been driven by industry, ensuring a sought-after qualification with transferable skills to prepare you for your chosen career.

Our alumni enjoy challenging careers in industry and academia, and many are invited to work alongside the School in its strategic development, such as industrial steering groups, ensuring that we retain our international standing as a centre of excellence and innovation in the materials sector.

World-class facilities
To underpin the research and teaching activities, we have established state-of-the-art laboratories, which allow comprehensive characterisation and development of materials. These facilities range from an electron microscopy suite, advanced mechanical testing equipment, nanofabrication equipment and cell culture laboratories.

Your future
We have developed the largest materials focus of any European university and, at an exciting time in the materials and engineering world, with our graduates in high demand and with an extensive range of postgraduate research and taught courses available, the opportunities for you are endless.
