Our environment
The Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, which was originally established in 1920, is one of the top-ranked schools of architecture in the UK. We attract postgraduate students from around the world, who benefit from the unique experience of studying and living in the friendly and welcoming capital city of Wales.

We provide a vibrant, collaborative environment for teaching and research; our student and staff communities encompass diverse national, cultural and professional backgrounds. We also foster a strong studio culture, encouraging architectural students to confront complex situations and issues with intelligence and creativity.

Through our research and teaching we seek to create a built environment that enhances people’s lives now, while contributing to the wellbeing of future generations. We collaborate with academia, industry and architectural practices across the world to maximise our student learning experience and the impact of our research. We also work closely with local communities to share our expertise and achieve common goals.  As a result, for several years, we have been listed among the top 50 schools specialising in Architecture and the Built Environment in the QS World Rankings.

Our postgraduate research programmes
Our MPhil and PhD programmes reflect the school’s established reputation in all aspects of sustainability, urbanism, architectural history and design-led approaches to research offering you the opportunity to work closely with academics related to your chosen field of study.

Our postgraduate research community comprises around 70 research students. These students are all at different stages in their MPhil/PhD studies and are exploring a wide variety of topics and questions relating to the built environment.

Our inclusive Research and Scholarship Groups (RSGs) sustain and support our research culture and help to mentor and nurture our research students and early career researchers. Research students have access to all of our RSGs to maximise exposure to their subject area and foster collaboration with other researchers. There are six available research groups:

Available PhD and MPhil courses

A full-time PhD registration is three years (or five years part-time) and a full-time MPhil is one year (or two years part-time).

Our facilities
Our teaching is based in the Bute Building, a Grade II listed building close to the city centre of Cardiff. As part of a major investment, we have refurbished our building to incorporate a wide range of new facilities for students and staff.

We offer dedicated desk space for every postgraduate research student in newly refurbished rooms.  A new auditorium allows students to host symposia and conferences, as well as break-out and rest areas that support informal and social activities. The Bute Building is also home to our bespoke Architecture Libraryrobotics laboratory, media lab, Living Lab and workshop, as well as various studio, exhibition and teaching spaces.

Student life
Cardiff is a thriving, beautiful city widely recognised as an outstanding place to live and study. It combines the advantages of a compact, friendly and inexpensive location with the cultural and recreational facilities of a modern capital city.

Cardiff University offers a range of accommodation choices to suit individual preferences and budgets, with overseas postgraduates (arriving in September) guaranteed a place for their first year.

There are also a wide range of facilities and support services available, such as student supportsports facilities, and specialised postgraduate facilities, to help you to ease into university life.
