Coventry University: Biomedical Science with Professional Experience (Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology Pathway)
|Institution||Coventry University View institution profile|
|Department||School of Life Sciences|
This master’s course provides an in-depth understanding of disease processes from the molecular to the body/systems level, alongside the practical applications of biomedical science and recent scientific developments in diagnostic laboratory pathology.
The programme is composed of a combination of modules which progressively build to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert), Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) or master’s. You can choose one of three specialist routes in biomedical science, all of which aim to advance your knowledge and link to the IBMS specialist training portfolio: Clinical Haematology and Blood Transfusion; Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology; and Infection Science.
Core modules will familiarise you with the theoretical and practical aspects of molecular medicine as it is used in research and hospital laboratories. You will learn about the principles and practice of laboratory management, acquiring the skills required for researching and communicating in biomedical science, while optional modules allow you to gain additional specialist knowledge in areas such as quality management or genetics.
Our extensive links with leading healthcare and research laboratories, such as NHS and private laboratories, enable us to ensure course content is kept up-to-date and relevant to employers. You will be introduced to some of the contemporary issues facing the industry, such as use of new technology and management of workload.
We provide hands-on practical experience of both laboratory and bioinformatics techniques. You will be trained in biotechnology research strategies and gain a sound understanding of the nature of business based on bioscience knowledge and research, their opportunities for innovation and regulatory requirement constraints, intellectual property and ethical issues.
To qualify at master’s level, you will undertake a research project/dissertation, which may be carried out in the University labs or in the workplace if you are currently employed. We offer a range of projects in biomedical science as well as more specialist research areas such as sickle cell and malarial parasites as we have staff and practitioners currently investigating topics in these expanding areas. Previous students have chosen topics such as investigation of natural products to improve antioxidant levels in sickle cells and the anticancer properties of natural products on a leukaemia cell line.
Why choose this course?
This professionally focused and accredited master’s course has been designed in response to employer feedback over current skills gaps and engages with current trends in disease diagnostics, as well as areas such as quality assurance, laboratory accreditation and work based training to engender a safe and accountable service.
It is intended for biomedical science graduates who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and professionalism. If you are already a Health Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered practitioner, it can aid career progression by providing the postgraduate qualification needed for senior level posts. Alternatively, if you wish to pursue employment within research or biomedical science laboratories, you will be eligible to undertake the IBMS Biomedical Scientist Training portfolio and register with the HCPC after completion.
If you choose the extended ‘With Professional Experience’ route, you will have the opportunity to gain substantive professional experience and have the option of applying for an internship with a host of different organisations or participate in supervised, campus-based projects. Internships are being organised within the public and private sector, including the NHS, private laboratories, healthcare providers, medical research, university research centres and more.
