Summary
Quite simply, our PGDip/ MA Carving is unique. If you are looking to become a high-level, professional sculptor, stone or woodcarver, or extend the scope of your current practice, this rewarding course is invaluable. Its depth of focus enables you to produce final projects that demonstrate your analytical ability as well as your mastery of carving and related skills.
Whether your career plans involve creating new work in historic contexts or restoring sculpture and architectural ornament, your aesthetic and historical knowledge will be as important as your manual skills. In addition to carving techniques, we provide specialist tuition in anatomy, observational drawing, figure and portrait modelling and art history.
We have excellent links with the industry, both through the Art School’s numerous collaborations and through the tutors’ own professional networks. Our alumni are sought-after for commissioned work and positions in the heritage industry, and many of our students go on to work in historic carving projects in Britain and abroad.
All of our tutors are inspiring, established professionals who combine working on some of the country’s most prestigious projects with teaching at the Art School. As active professionals, their experience and valuable network of industry contacts make for a highly vocational course. We pride ourselves on our staffing levels, so although the course is primarily self-directed, you are guaranteed the one-to-one supervision that the subject demands.
