Valérie Belair-Gagnon has come from Canada to study a PhD in Sociology at City University London. As an international student she has found the Postgrad Solutions Study Bursary particularly helpful, she says, “I feel honoured. Also, being an international student, the fees are high and opportunities for scholarships are limited. The bursary helps me to finance my studies.”
She found out about the opportunity to apply for a £500 bursary via the Postgrad.com website, which she always finds useful. She says, “The Postgrad.com website is full - from postgraduate finances to forums - and provides good guidance for graduate students in the UK. I often visit it to see what is new in the postgrad area in the UK.”
29-year-old Valérie chose to come from Canada to study in the UK because she wanted to study abroad to gain knowledge and bring something new to her field when she goes back to Canada. She then selected
City University London
for several reasons, she explains, “First, because of its reputation in media studies and journalism. It has a good record in developing practical and entrepreneurial research projects. Second, I wanted to work with my supervisor, Dr Jean K Chalaby who is a specialist in the field. And finally, I wanted to study in London which has the biggest news organisations facilities in the world.”
So far she is really enjoying her postgraduate programme, “I have mostly enjoyed the opportunities that I have had throughout the process. I feel very privileged that I got the opportunity to have access to the BBC newsroom and conduct my field work there. I also have very good support from my department, colleagues and supervisors.”
