The Scariest Things About Being a Postgraduate Student

Being a postgraduate student can mean many fun times lie ahead, but it also means many terrifying ones too!

So what are some of these scary things we speak of...?

Getting Out of Bed in Time for Early Morning Lectures It might not sound like hard work, but motivating yourself to get out of bed in the morning for 9am lectures isn't easy. In the winter it's still dark this early in the morning! Nobody should have to get up when it's still dark. It's not natural! Maybe if you get yourself off to bed at 10pm the night before you'll have a fighting chance, but that's still a MAYBE.

Essay Crises You know you're in the midst of an essay crisis when:

  1. You're so tired you can't quite make out the computer screen and every time you hit a key you get a typo.

  2. You're panicking and feeling more and more hopeless with every passing minute.

  3. The clock reads somewhere between the hours of midnight and 6am.

  4. You've heard yourself say, 'I have so much work to do I am probably not going to get to bed tonight' multiple times throughout the day.

  5. You have overwhelming feelings of self loathing and pity.

Answered yes to all of the above? You my friend are definitely having an essay crisis. Don't worry there will be many more of these to come during your postgraduate study.

Binge Drinking If you don't drink you're in luck. If you do, prepare for feelings of pure fear when you open your wallet after a night out to find absolutely nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada. There is nothing worse than having no idea what you managed to spend £100 on and not even having any unforgettable memories to soothe the pain.

Being the Oldest Postgraduate Student on the Block Feeling nervous about whether you're going to be the oldest postgraduate student on your course? Don't fret it. Postgrads come from all walks of life and vary in age. Yes there will most likely be students on your course that could be your grandchildren, but heck you're only as young as you feel right?

Rooming with Weirdos If you don't have the money to get your own place, and you can't rely on family to throw you a lifeline (or you just want to go it alone) you might end up rooming with a weirdo. Yes we said it. Some people are just plain strange. When you feel a sudden urge to lock your bedroom door every time you're left alone in the flat with your less than favourable roommate, it may be time to put an ad in the classifieds for new student accommodation .

Communal Areas Following on from the subject of roommates, let's talk about communal areas. If you happen to share a communal area there will come a time where it has to be cleaned up. Depending on your housemates, you may be faced with something that resembles a bombsite (in reality it's a kitchen!) You don't know real fear until you open your fridge to find something that looks like it could only belong in a bio-hazard bag.
