Postgraduate funding to be investigated

The Higher Education Commission has launched an independent inquiry to investigate postgraduate education in the UK.

This inquiry will look at aspects of postgraduate funding  including the possibility of Government-backed loans.

The inquiry chairman, Mr Graham Spittle says, "It is an area that has been overlooked recently. With all the changes to undergraduate fees, we have really taken our eye off what is happening further up in postgraduate education.

"If you talk to vice-chancellors [of universities] most of them are very concerned about the increased undergraduate fees and its impact on postgraduate study. We will look at how it will effect postgraduate education."

He continues, "We urgently need a proper strategy for postgraduate education. This inquiry will conduct an evidence-based review of current provision and structures and set out what more the postgraduate system can do."

The Higher Education Commission includes figures from the education sector, as well as those from the worlds of politics and business. As well as being the Chairman of the inquiry, Graham Spittle is the Chief Technology Officer at IBM, and other members of the Commission include senior parliamentarians and former university vice chancellors.

It is anticipated that the inquiry will deliver its report in June or July this year after consultation with several universities.
