3 Compassionate Careers For Postgrads

It is always said that you should choose a career that you love, and this saying is very true. As your studies come to a close, or you are embarking on the journey to a postgraduate degree, you may be looking for some direction. The following is a small collection of differing career paths that require a higher degree. The other thing that all these careers need is a person who has a big heart and enjoys helping others.

Medicine
Medicine is a career path that is very broad. Once you have completed a degree , usually in a biology or science related discipline, you can choose post graduate studies that focus on a more narrow discipline and pursue you masters or doctorate degree. The journey to a doctorate of medicine is long, but if you have a serious desire to help others the rewards will be worth all the time you have invested in it. Some of the disciplines that you may choose from are:

  • Pediatrics and the health of children
  • Cancer Biology and Researching for a cure
  • Surgical degrees
  • Neurosciences

Any of these disciplines will put you in a position allowing you to make a difference in the lives of others. Alternatively, you may choose to pursue a degree in nursing, or one of its specializations. This does not require a doctorate degree and still allows you to be there for people who are sick, hurt, or dying.

Teaching
A route that is commonly followed in order to become a teacher is that after the completion of your degree in your area of choosing, you would take a postgraduate degree in education. With a postgraduate degree in education you can teach at many different levels depending on the level of your other degree. For instance someone who holds a doctorate degree can apply for teaching jobs at a university level. A career that involves educating people requires an individual who is caring and likes to see others succeed. You also need to be very patient and understanding, as you are dealing with others who have lives that vary differently from one to the next. Becoming a teacher would allow you to be a role model and put you into a position where you can inspire others and lift them up so they too will realize success.

Counseling
A postgraduate degree in sociology is quite popular with those who would like to counsel others. As a counselor you will have the opportunity to work with people in varying situations and from varying walks of life. You may choose to deal mainly with troubled youth if that is where you feel a connection, or you may opt to work with those who are unemployed and have limited resources. You and your clients will work together in an effort to change their life for the better. Another career that is under this umbrella is a social worker. Social workers spend their days working with children and their families, often trying to pick up the pieces of a broken home. This career may bring you into contact with people who need your help due to physical and emotional abuse.

A compassionate career allows you to put your heart and soul into your work. You will be using your flair for comforting and empathizing to help others who may be at their lowest point. Although these careers can be rewarding in ways that are hard to express, they are very emotionally taxing as well. Job shadowing someone in your chosen career path will allow you to “try it on” and see if you would be able to handle the feelings and pressures that come with a compassionate career.

I am searching to find a university within my local area (Wiltshire) which is accepting the NHS government funding as Mental health Social work degree post grad Masters.

I am a mature student and unable to relocate, I am able to commute from time to time but would not wish to do so too frequently and completed my undergraduate in Psychology and Criminology at UWE this year. Initially I wanted to complete a counselling psychology degree however I am limited with funds.

If I could speak with someone to discuss some options that would be much appreciated as there are so many options to consider with the Post-Covid world.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Kind Regards,
Holly Aitken
