Summary

Our MSc European Politics and Policy offers an intensive exploration of how politics, government and public policy operate within EU's governing structures and institutions. These are placed within an international context and considered alongside pressing issues associated with international relations, international law and globalisation and global politics.

You will be taught by academics with expertise and an extensive publication record in EU and wider European politics and government. The programme combines theoretical approaches with empirical knowledge and real-world case studies. It also involves several special events with leading guest speakers, including policy makers and academics.

You will explore the history, theories, politics and institutions of European integration, as well as the politics of Euroscepticism (in the UK and beyond) and competing views about the future of the European Union. The programme also covers the EU’s policies in a range of sectors (including the single market, foreign affairs, macro-economic policy) and offers you the conceptual and theoretical tools to analyse public policy within and across states.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The programme’s director, Dr Dionyssis G. Dimitrakopoulos engages actively in this arena. His podcast/vlog series Talking Europe provides easily accessible expert commentary on key political, social, economic events and processes unfolding in Europe. It also showcases the Europe-related research that Birkbeck-based academics are currently conducting. You can watch his Facebook live event from September 2019.

• Our Department of Politics is a world-renowned centre of original, influential research. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), Politics at Birkbeck was ranked 17th in the UK.

• Our academic staff are international authorities in their respective fields, publishing and delivering stimulating teaching in a wide range of political topics including civil society and the state, public policy, development, gender, international security and terrorism, and social and political theory, among others. • The Department organises a lively programme of seminars and conferences and is home to affiliated research centres, such as the Birkbeck Centre for British Political Life, which run seminars, conferences and other events where some of the world's best scholars present their latest research.

• Our location in central London puts us at the heart of the UK’s political life and the centre of academic London. You can walk down to Parliament and Whitehall, where Parliament and the UK’s most influential and important think-tanks and centres of political research and analysis are located. Our departmental building was once a key location for members of the Bloomsbury Group, so you could be studying in rooms that have hosted distinguished visitors, including T. S. Eliot, George Bernard Shaw and Maynard Keynes.

• You can take advantage of the rich research collections nearby, including Senate House Library, next door to Birkbeck, the British Library, five minutes’ walk away, and the British Library of Political and Economic Science at the London School of Economics, which is walkable from Birkbeck. Birkbeck Library has a large politics collection, including the major specialist journals, and provides you with access to an extensive range of online materials.

Introduction
Birkbeck, part of the University of London, offers nearly 300 taught and research postgraduate programmes across arts and humanities, business and economics, law, science and social science. As an evening teaching specialist, Birkbeck offers its taught postgraduate courses between 6-9pm, with some courses available through distance learning.
