The first year: research training:

Birkbeck's PhD Management is more structured than many UK PhDs. In the first year (both full-time and part-time) you are required to take 4 modules for credit. Ordinarily they are the following, although permission to substitute alternate research training modules may be granted:

You also take 1 quantitative methods module.

The first year (full time) or second year (part time): surveying your field and planning your research:

These are the basis for your Research Prospectus, which includes a preliminary literature review and a plan for the rest of your thesis research. The Research Prospectus is examined by a panel of 3 members of the academic staff in June of your first year (full time students) or second year (part time students).

The second and third years (full-time) or third through fifth years (part-time):

Upon satisfactory completion of the required modules and the Research Prospectus, you proceed to data collection, analysis, and writing your PhD thesis. A PhD is a substantial piece of original research. It requires that you be highly motivated, well organised, and prepared to learn your subject in depth. It requires working independently on your own unique project, and at the same time producing something that will satisfy the standards of the particular academic community that will judge it.

When you have completed your literature review and data collection, and made substantial progress in your data analysis, you will upgrade from MPhil to PhD.
