This is a practical master’s course on which specialist photographers, illustrators and graphic designers work alongside one another. We encourage you to work independently and collaboratively, while exploring shared visual language.

Working in consultation with your tutors and with other students, you will build a critical & professional context for your practice in the process of developing each of your projects. Your growing confidence and increased abilities will be clearly evident in the work you make with us and the portfolio’s you construct.

You’ll develop your visual communication practice, concentrating on practical, conceptual, historical and contemporary components, as well as engaging in critical dialogue with students from a range of related fields. We will help you to integrate the skills you learn with us and become a knowledgeable, confident and effective graphic designer, illustrator or photographer.

Graduates have progressed to careers as:

- freelance Illustrators, photographers and graphic designers

- specialist screen printers

- photo editors for design agencies, magazines and journals

- designers for architectural and engineering practices

- photographers & designers for the M.O.D. and other specialist areas.

Entry requirements

A good 1st degree (2.1 and above, or the international equivalent) in a related subject area, in addition to a portfolio that demonstrates the applicant's visual ability. Applicants may be selected based upon their particular work background, and their aptitude to the course. If their work experience is in a parallel field, appropriate to the course, applicants will be considered.


Assessment of modules is by written submission, presentation and exhibition. A dissertation is optional and can be negotiated on an individual basis; it can form a part of the final exhibition and will be assessed at the same point.
