Study the Translating for Business and International Institutions MA course at Aston University to prepare for an exciting professional career in the global language industry and succeed in the translation market at an international level.
What you'll learn You will study the translation industry in-depth and gain a thorough understanding of translation theories and strategies so that you are able to take on an informed, critical approach to translation practice.
You will develop your technological skills and will become familiar with the most popular and cutting-edge computer-assisted translation tools in the market, including translation memories, machine translation and localisation tools, and develop expertise in multilingual specialised translation. You will also have the opportunity to work towards SDL Trados certification (the world's leading translation software solution).
You will gain language-independent translation principles to tackle the translation of highly specialised texts, as well as learning about text types and their relation to translation, terminology and specialised language. The practical translation modules have a clear focus on translation for business, while the specialised translation modules will help you develop and improve the competences that will allow you to produce high-quality translations in English.
A business module, delivered by the renowned Aston Business School, will provide you with knowledge and skills in a variety of professional aspects relevant to the translation industry, including setting up a business, providing high quality services and standard entrepreneurial practices.
Aston is a member of the prestigious European Masters in Translation (EMT) network and a corporate member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), so you will have access to professional advice and support, including events, workshops, journals and career bulletins. A mentoring programme provided by the West Midlands Group of the ITI will allow students to learn close-up from professional translators.
You will also benefit from regular guest lectures from practicing translators and industry representatives, from project managers to company directors.
January 2021 start We’re offering postgraduate courses starting in January 2021 for UK, EU and international students.
A wide, but alternative, range of study abroad options will be available for January starts. If you are an international student, your visa will still be valid until the end of May the year following your entry date.

| Entry requirements | 2:2 degree in Translation Studies, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese or a related subject (e.g. Linguistics, English, Literature, etc). You will need to indicate a minimum level of competence as equivalent to CEFR C1 in the language other than English that you plan to study. Applicants who cannot provide formal evidence of their level of language competence in a language other than English will be assessed individually by the department. If your first language is not English or your first degree was not taught in English in an English-speaking country, one of the following is required: IELTS 6.5 overall (at least 5.5 in one band and 6.0 in the other bands) or TOEFL iBT 93 overall. Applicants with alternative qualifications may wish to enquire with the relevant admissions teams prior to application whether or not their qualifications are deemed acceptable.
