Summary
This course is designed to offer a professional incubation unit alongside a taught MA course. Students engage in a unique work, study and research environment, all under one roof, which promotes visual and critical thinking, research skills and storytelling ability, whilst developing entrepreneurial qualities, communication and professional skills.
The programme has its own dedicated studio spaces and access to a wide variety of traditional and cutting-edge resources including drawing studio, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, letterpress, animation, laser cutting, 3D printing, virtual reality sculpting and drawing.
Through a project-based curriculum, developing original visual illustrative languages and authorship using traditional media as well as emerging digital technologies, the programme focuses upon building individual visual practice whilst being informed by and collaborating with areas of research and links with disciplines / agencies from within the University and the outside world.
Sustainability and ethical dimensions aligned to UN Sustainability Goals to making work and communicating content to specified audiences are a particular feature.
The programme is tailored to enable your professional interests to emerge and consolidate through project-based, innovative work.
Career and entrepreneurial skills are developed through a structured programme of lectures on networking, copyright, licensing and bookkeeping as well as visiting practitioners offering alternate views on industry and their own practice.
Students are eligible to promote, publish and disseminate their outputs via the programme’s press; plymouthpress.club and take part in a key London graduate show.
The course is taught by award-winning illustrators, educators and researchers.
We expect graduate creative leaders with a high degree of illustration, design and technical awareness able to operate within industrial, multidisciplinary, creative and collaborative professional environments.
By completing this course, you will be prepared for the professional art and design marketplaces as an autonomous or collective practitioner or as a candidate for further study at MPhil/ PhD level.
Tier 4 visa holders are not able to study this course as it is delivered part-time project based

Entry requirements | Normally a 2:1 degree from a UK University or equivalent and evidence of a sustained engagement with the field, plus a portfolio of work (can be digital). But we will consider students below 2:1 if they can demonstrate a strong academic portfolio or a record of professional experience. IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent required for overseas students. Applicants will be required to submit a portfolio of work plus a 200 - 500 word outline of areas of potential interest, study and career aspirations. Applicants are also required to provide an academic reference in support of their application. The University also has substantial experience in supporting mature students and welcomes applicants in this category. Applicants with APL will be considered on an individual basis according to the University Regulations Framework. Students interested in transferring postgraduate credits will be considered on merit and current University regulations regarding transfer of credits from other institutions will apply. |
