Summary

Our immersive distance-learning programme places you at the heart of the operating theatre using the latest virtual reality technology. You'll gain expertise in the rapidly developing area of laparoscopic surgery – as well as bowel anastomosis – and develop your confidence in clinical settings.

  • Gain the skills you need for the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland's LapPass – the 'Laparoscopic Passport'

  • Our online format means you can study alongside your medical training

  • Borrow a 'take-home' simulator and materials for regular hands-on practice

  • Optional summer school for practical experience and face-to-face feedback

  • An ideal career boost if you want to work in general surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a technically demanding area of medicine and few people have the necessary expertise to work in this area – this course allows you to learn complex skills that are in high demand.

Using our virtual learning platform – which has been specially developed to teach laparoscopic surgery and bowel anastomosis – you'll be able to tailor your learning to build your confidence and master essential surgical skills.

You’ll receive a ‘take-home’ simulator, instruments, sutures, practice jigs and a virtual reality headset so you can gain regular hands-on practice.

You’ll gain all the training you need to meet the standards set by the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland for obtaining LapPass (the 'Laparoscopic Passport'). Gaining a LapPass means you’ll have a benchmark qualification that recognises your laparoscopic skills in a simulated environment.

As well as these key practical skills, you'll develop a clear understanding of the research process, including critical appraisal and how to present work for publication.

To complete the programme, you’ll be expected to have internet access, a smartphone to use our virtual reality applications and a webcam.

This programme is unique in its teaching methods: you'll learn using the latest virtual and augmented reality technologies.

You'll also be taught through more traditional methods, including online lectures, reading materials, discussion forums and videos to demonstrate practical skills.

You'll use a Portable Laparoscopic Box Trainer with instruments, sutures and practice jigs together with our Virtual Reality Touch Surgery technology to enable you to practice your skills.

You can also attend our optional summer school to develop your skills further using our state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Surgical Simulator and to be assessed by our onsite tutors for the Laparoscopic Passport. Please note: the summer school will only run if enough students sign up.
