Swansea University’s Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT) - a unique institute focused on research and graduate teaching in all aspects of telecommunications - has joined the prestigious Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence in Mobile and Personal Communications (Mobile VCE).
Mobile VCE is a partnership of around 20 of the world’s most prominent mobile communications companies and seven UK universities who all have long-standing specialist expertise in the area, and competition to join the partnership is stiff. Members currently include King’s College London, the Universities of Edinburgh and Bristol, and industry partners including BAE, BT, Orange, Philips and Alcatel Lucent.
Mobile VCE engages in industrially-led, long-term projects, whose scope and reach have a global dimension and whose activities demand a high financial R&D leverage. IAT will be specifically involved in the Core 5 Research programme (2008-2011), working alongside Bristol, Edinburgh and King’s College London in the development of green radio.
The IAT team who have secured membership of this innovative collaborative include Professor Jinho Choi and Professor Tim O’Farrell. Professor Choi said: 'This success is very important and significant for IAT, as a relatively new institute. This opportunity to work with these highly reputable, well-established partners is what we have worked to achieve.'
