Games design courses go from strength to strength at Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University, pioneers of games courses in software development and animation, just keep attracting and cultivating some of the best students around. Talented students from Sheffield Hallam University are celebrating after scooping two top awards in a regional competition.

Toby Everett and Mike Roberts, who are studying for an MA in Animation for Computer Games, took first place in best game design and best overall student, respectively, at the Game Republic Student Showcase. Toby's design involved a flying dragon, which amazed the judges because of its attention to detail and quality of the animation. Mike impressed them with an innovative and expressive series of artwork and animations.
The duo also took second place, together with fellow student Jenny Rathbone, for a group submission.

Principal lecturer Dr Paul Parry is thrilled with the success: 'The competition was very strong with PhD students and over 30 other Masters students. It is a tremendous result for Toby, Mike and Jenny, and rewards their talent and passion.'

The MA Animation for Computer Games, and its stable mate, the MSc Games Software Development, have already gained support from industry leaders, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Codemasters UK. A key strength of both courses is that they contain modules covering the technical and artistic elements of game development, and importantly, with close interaction between students. 'As the industry becomes more and more specialised, it is important to distinguish yourself and hone your skills to Masters level', said Paul. 'To complement our existing courses and to keep at the forefront of the industry, we have developed an exciting new course, MA Sound Design. It starts in September 2008, which covers the broader applications of sound design and sound art in relation to surround sound, immersive experiences, creating real and imagined sonic environments. It's already attracting interest from the game, film and media industries.'
