Sociology at Birmingham to become part of a new interdisciplinary School of Government and Society

University of Birmingham logoFrom 1st August, Sociology at Birmingham will be part of a new interdisciplinary School of Government and Society. This brings Sociology together with the Department of Politics and International Studies, one of the UK’s top politics departments, and with the internationally recognised International Development Department and the Institute for Local Government Studies.

The Department now offers two new interdisciplinary MA degrees:
MA in Social and Political Theory
MA in Democratic Participation and Governance

These new degrees are offered alongside our existing successful programmes:
MA in Social Research (Sociology and Cultural Studies), which is ESRC recognised
MA in Ethnicities and Culture
MA in Media, Culture and Society
MA in Sociology, which is also offered in a variant designed for overseas students
MA in Sociology with English for Academic and Professional Purposes.

Students take three modules, one of which is a compulsory core module. Two optional modules are chosen from a designated range of modules. Students complete a 12,500- word dissertation other assessment is primarily by coursework.

The Department also welcomes research proposals to study for MPhil and PhD degrees from outstanding candidates in all areas of expertise within the Department, particularly:
• ethnicity and culture
• media and cultural studies
• political sociology
• social theory.

A limited number of bursaries are available at MA level. British and EU students are eligible to apply for ESRC PhD research studentships (‘1+3’ and +3). International students interested in research are encouraged to apply for Overseas Research Student (ORSAS) Awards. The Department and the University additionally offer a limited number of research studentships.
