Summary
The Professional Translation for European Languages MA combines practical training and theory to give you the skills and knowledge to become a professional translator.
You'll work between English and one/two of the following languages: French German Italian Spanish
The professional translation focus is a distinctive feature of this course. It incorporates: translation theory practice professionalism in translation
What you'll learn You will receive expert training in professional tools and computer-assisted translation (CAT) software. The training will explain how to work in different contexts, such as: business and finance legal technical marketing and publicity literary translation
In your professional life you will only translate into your mother tongue and our teaching reflects this.
Opportunities for further learning You can attend regular talks delivered by translation and interpreting professionals. The talks have the aim of furthering your understanding of the industry and developing your own personal professional profile. Speakers include representatives from: the European Commission NGO’s translation agencies freelance professionals
You’ll be able to apply for free membership of the Chartered Institute of Linguists for the duration of the course. You will also be part of the Translating and Interpreting Research Forum, which will keep you informed of: events networking opportunities news in Newcastle
You'll have the opportunity to visit institutions of the European Union in Brussels and organisations for international justice in The Hague during the summer term, including: The Directorate General for Translation The European Parliament International Court of Justice International Criminal Court
The School of Modern Languages runs a University Wide Language Programme. The programme offers free evening classes in a large variety of languages. You could start learning a new language or further your skills in a language not studied as part of the course. These languages include: Arabic Mandarin Chinese French German Italian Japanese Korean Portuguese Russian Spanish
Work experience Our membership of the European Master's in Translation network gives you priority access to traineeships in the Directorate-General for Translation at the European Commission, and opens up further opportunities to apply for internships in the language and translation industry.
We encourage you to seek work experience alongside the course. Opportunities are available through our award-winning Careers Service, including the Newcastle Work Experience programme.
Accreditation The course is accredited by the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) network. This ensures you receive a professional qualification of the highest standards. The EMT accreditation is a quality label awarded by the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission. This testifies to the course providing a high standard of: training infrastructure career support mentoring
We are also a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).
Delivery The course structure allows you to tailor your own programme of study through: professional practice and research-led compulsory modules (in specialised translation, translation theory, and use of CAT tools) a wide range of optional modules (in translation from a second foreign language, legal translation, literary translation, translation for EU institutions, Interpreting, finance and marketing) a translation project or dissertation.
Our teaching is based on experiential learning which develops your skills in a real-world context. You will study both independently and in groups.
In semesters one and two you have taught classes during office hours, Monday to Friday. From June to August, you will work with a research supervisor on an extended translation project or dissertation. If you are taking the MA part time, your work is split over two years.
