A TOP 15 RESEARCH-LED UNIVERSITY
The University of Exeter, recently voted Times Higher Education University of the Year (2007-08), is ranked 13th in The Times and 14th in The Guardian 2008 league tables. Ninety-nine per cent of subject areas taught at postgraduate level received the top grades of 4, 5 or 5* for research in the RAE (2001). We offer over 200 postgraduate courses across Science, Engineering and Technology, Social Science, Business, Law, Arts and Humanities.

We have made 182 new academic appointments in the last 2 years and have succeeded in attracting truly world class scholars, including 38 new professors in disciplines as diverse as Arab and Islamic Studies, Psychology, Bioscience, Engineering, Geography and Modern Languages. The University’s Cornwall Campus near Falmouth, which opened in October 2004, has attracted top-flight academic staff, including five Royal Society and two NERC Research Fellows.

The University invested £51 million in research last year and the value of new grant awards rose by 49 per cent. We are planning an additional investment of £80 million in science, medicine and engineering over the next three years. Exeter receives significant funding from the Research Councils: we are in the top 12 UK universities for receipt of research awards from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and in the top 15 for awards from the Economic and Social Research Council.

EXCEPTIONAL LOCATIONS
ExeterThe University consists of three campuses: two in Exeter and one in Cornwall.

The Streatham Campus, the University’s largest site in Exeter, is one of the most beautiful in the country. The St Luke’s Campus, our second site in Exeter, offers modern facilities in a traditional setting which has retained its vibrant, collegiate atmosphere. A safe, student-friendly city within walking distance of both campuses, Exeter is consistently rated one of the best places to live in the UK for the quality of its facilities and low crime rate. For those looking to escape city life, sandy beaches, moorland and some of the most stunning countryside in Britain are all just a short journey away. Exeter is no longer the ‘sleepy cathedral town’ but is booming economically and culturally but without losing its human scale and relaxed ambience. Large companies like the Met Office are choosing to relocate and there are major developments in shopping, leisure and nightlife in the city centre, including a £200 million new retail centre. Exeter ranks joint 8th (just behind Brisbane, Shanghai, Sydney and London) in a worldwide study of promotion of inward investment.

Our innovative, £100 million Cornwall Campus is set in a beautiful location just a short distance from the waterside town of Falmouth. With over 3,000 students studying in the local area, Falmouth has developed into a lively student town, with a wealth of bars, pubs and restaurants from the contemporary to the traditional. The Cornwall Campus provides the very latest in academic, research and residential facilities including new purpose-built ensuite rooms in the self-catering student village.

HIGH INVESTMENT IN STUDENT AND RESEARCH FACILITIES
University of Exeter imageWe are near to completing a £140 million investment programme in new buildings and facilities, ranging from dedicated postgraduate study facilities and new research centres to the Students’ Guild building and nightclub. £38 million has been invested in high quality student accommodation, with some self-catering residences in Exeter reserved exclusively for postgraduates. The University is now looking to the future with a planned £450 million investment in campus facilities by the end of the next decade.

Exeter’s expenditure on library books, journals and electronic resources is 40 per cent above the national average in terms of spend per full-time student (LISU/SCONUL figures, 2005/6) and an £8 million development programme has given Exeter some of the best sports facilities in the country. New indoor tennis facilities to LTA standards opened in 2004 on the Streatham Campus, making Exeter one of only nine UK universities to have such facilities and a new £2 million cricket centre will open in autumn 2008.

FUNDING YOUR STUDIES
To attract and retain outstanding postgraduates, we invest some £4.5 million per year in scholarships and financial support for postgraduates at the University of Exeter. On offer are schemes for both postgraduate taught and postgraduate research programmes. Our University wide, prestigious Full-Fee Masters Scholarship scheme pays for the tuition fees of 18 students across a wide-range of disciplines and we offer a similar scheme for International Students. Individual Schools also offer their own schemes and many offer Research Council Awards. Our scholarships database enables you to search for any funding opportunities relevant to you. Visit www.exeter.ac.uk/scholarships for details.

DEDICATED SUPPORT AND TRAINING
We provide a range of support and training to both enable you to study as a postgraduate at the University and to ensure you get the most out of your time here. This support contributes towards our excellent track record of PhD completion and above average employment rates.

For Postgraduate Research students the Graduate School runs a Skills Programme: our Effective Researcher Development Programme meets and exceeds the Research Councils’ requirements. This is available both in Exeter and Cornwall. Postgraduate Research students also benefit from the Graduate School’s eProfile system. This provides a web publishing tool for you to showcase your research profile, providing a powerful means to promote your work to the academic community, collaborators, sponsors and employers.

We provide dedicated resources for postgraduates: the Postgraduate Centre on the Streatham Campus offers purpose-built study and leisure facilities, including a 24-hour computer room, lounges, seminar room, bar and dining room. St Lukes and Cornwall-based students have access to their own dedicated research and study facilities. The Postgraduate Union (PGU) represents postgraduates across the University, organising the Postgraduate Forum which gives students the opportunity to provide feedback, as well as social events. Postgraduates are well represented on the Guild’s award-winning media and wide range of clubs and societies.

I came to the University of Exeter School of Education in September 2007 to study PhD in TESOL. The more I see and discover about this great university, the more I love it. I was impressed by the university’s positive and enthusiastic attitude to sort out any problems or difficulties encountered by its students. I’m always sent emails inviting me to attend so many free useful workshops that help me to develop many research and academic skills. In Exeter learning is a joyful experience, fostered by cooperative, encouraging tutors and supervisors who push me forward in the right direction.
Mahmoud Mohammad Sayed Abdallah, 2008

The total university experience has been wonderful. The campus is beautiful, as well as the city. The staff in my department are friendly and my degree has prepared me well for my career field.
Masters student, School of Arts, Languages and Literatures, 2007
