The College of Estate Management
The future is distance learning
The College of Estate Management (CEM)’s wide range of postgraduate programmes are designed to provide industry-related education that complements the experience gained in the workplace, and therefore represent a cost-effective way of gaining prestigious qualifications. Students will develop traditional technical skills alongside academic questioning and debate.
More than 3,500 students from over 80 countries are currently enrolled on courses designed to help them obtain a professional qualification, develop a post-qualification specialisation or simply undertake their work more effectively in today’s rapidly changing environment.
History
Founded in 1919 and granted a Royal Charter in 1922, CEM specialises in providing web-assisted distance learning to professionals in the property and construction industries. The College has a close association with the University of Reading, on whose campus it is situated, but it remains an independent, self-funding institution.
The College operates from two locations; the main building is on the University of Reading’s campus at Whiteknights Park, where CEM and the Department of Construction Management share an award-winning building surrounded by parkland. Leafy Shinfield Grange, a 17th-Century house situated in 13 acres of landscaped gardens and a lake, is used for teaching workshops, seminars and conferences.
Why distance learning?
The College has been organising distance learning before many universities were founded and offers a range of courses related to the property and construction industries, with a special focus on accredited professional programmes. Most of the students are in employment and are studying by distance learning to obtain further qualifications and so improve their career prospects – without having to give up work.

Studying with the College is a cost-effective route to professional membership.
Taking the distance out of distance learning
Once a student enrols on a distance-learning course, they will usually receive their study material in the post – a box containing textbooks, CDs, videos, introductory notes and details of how to log on to the student portal. There will also be a course programme and a timetable of when assignments are required to be submitted and the dates of exams.
Students are offered significant online support, with help and notes on the coursework, as well as discussion forums with other students, problem-solving blogs and direct communication with course tutors. Much of the study material is also available online, through the virtual-learning environment, which means that students can study at work without having to haul a huge satchel of heavy books through the commuter rush hour. Face-to-face meetings with tutors are generally held two or three times a year, and exams are held at designated centres in the UK and overseas.
