Brunel University
Introduction
Brunel has always prided itself on the quality and the relevance of its academic work. It places great value on its pure investigative research, but has also always valued the usefulness of its research to the community at large. This is why collaboration with major companies, the public sector, charities, national institutions and with countries worldwide is an essential element of so much of its research activity.
Brunel has always been confident that its courses bear comparison with the best and teaching quality assessments by the UK Government’s Quality Assurance Agency prove it. Continuing in its £250m investment, Brunel has already seen huge developments in sporting, teaching and research facilities, as well as large numbers of additional research-focused academic appointments.
Facilities
Brunel’s Graduate School is located in the centre of the Uxbridge campus and, as well as social areas, it has quiet study areas, 24-hour secure access, a lecture theatre and conference room, and a postgraduate-only computer room. Its Postgraduate Society aims to bring together postgraduates from across the University through social events, research evenings and a quarterly newsletter.
Brunel’s recently refurbished and extended library offers a wide range of services, and has provision for group and private study. In addition, its website makes a wealth of information available from a student’s desktop, such as bibliographic databases, e-books, over 8,000 journals, links to subject-specific information pages and guides to its electronic resources.
On-campus accommodation
A proportion of places in the University halls of residence are reserved for full-time international and home postgraduate students. Accommodation is allocated for periods of 51 weeks (September to September), after which time students will normally move off campus. Full-time research students can apply for accommodation for their second and third years.
Taught courses
Brunel has over 100 taught master’s courses on offer and many are available in either full-time or part-time modes. The University has also introduced a new type of master’s degree, Master of Research (MRes), which can provide a solid foundation if students intend to go on to a PhD. The taught modules will vary in the way they are presented. Through lectures, seminars and more small-group teaching than is possible at undergraduate level, postgraduates from a variety of work backgrounds are able to exchange professional expertise within an academic context.
Fees and funding
The University offers a limited number of postgraduate scholarships, based on merit and awarded across all academic areas. All are available only to applicants who already hold an offer of a place to study at Brunel.
