Today, nearly 16,500 students choose to study with Bournemouth University each year and of these more than 1,600 are international students from around 130 countries creating a lively and diverse experience.

BU embraces a collaborative working environment where students and staff come together to develop ideas and projects that have a real world impact on today’s global businesses.

Bournemouth is known to foster innovative learning by designing courses which reflect the needs of the modern world. As a result, BU was the first university in the UK to offer degrees in Public Relations and Forensic Archaeology. The Business School will offer a complete new portfolio of courses for October 2008.

BU’s postgraduate research community is known for its high quality and incisive activities. Based on the UK’s most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), Bournemouth’s highest rated centre of excellence is the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) based in our prestigious Media School. The NCCA was rated 5 – the highest score given by the Art and Design Unit of Assessment.

Bournemouth is home to other subject areas which are emerging as centres of excellence including Tourism, Forensic Science, and Environmental Science and the University has established expertise in Intellectual Property and Policy Management, Broadcasting History and Qualitative Research amongst others.

BU is also leading the country in the recruitment of research students since 2006 with some 53 students receiving fully-funded PhD studentships.

BU offers modern lecture theatres, seminar rooms, dedicated laboratories and computing centres - some of which are available 24 hours a day. The University is very proud to be at the forefront of technological innovation in higher education and benefits from one of the most extensive wireless computing networks of any UK university.

Specialised facilities within Academic Schools reflect BU’s commitment to providing first-class resources including purpose-built studios for computer animation and digital special effects; recording studios, editing suites and a new high-tech television studio which will give Bournemouth the only University-based high definition capable facility in the UK; a Prototyping and Virtual Manufacture centre and Rose Cottage, a unique ‘crime house’ used to train forensic students.

Bournemouth and Poole regions offer a vibrant cosmopolitan community with many cultural, artistic, sporting and social opportunities available. The mild climate and seven miles of golden beach makes the area perfect for a wide variety of water-sports and other outdoor pursuits. Bournemouth boasts award-winning gardens, fabulous shopping, nightlife and a thriving music scene. The local countryside boasts the country’s newest national park, the New Forest and the Jurassic Coastlines of Dorset and Devon.

Extensive rail, road, air and sea links bring the rest of Britain and continental destinations even closer to Bournemouth. London is less than two hours away by train and the ever-expanding Bournemouth International Airport provides an excellent gateway to Europe.

The Guardian league table shows a rise of 31 places for BU; in the Times Good University Guide we have risen 23 places in 3 years – the highest climb for any UK university in that period.
