Summary

In this course, you will be prompted to delve into cultural and critical perspectives on contemporary photography while experimenting with analogue and digital image-making techniques.

Based at one of the top-rated teaching institutions in the UK (NSS 2023), this is a bespoke course that nurtures your interests and ambitions as an artist.

Our MA Photography team will support you to challenge yourself - helping you enhance your skills and build a strong foundation for the next stage of your career. You will access HCA's specialised darkrooms and state-of-the-art digital studios, benefiting from our interdisciplinary environment. Additionally, you'll gain valuable first-hand insights from visiting photographers and artists - recent examples include Mark Neville, Katrina Stamatopoulos & Martin Parr.

You will be challenged to broaden the scope of your work and experiment with innovative approaches. Anchored in the awareness of photography's ever-evolving nature, you will explore the essence of photography’s modern practice, developing adaptability & innovation. Integrating conceptualisation, research & practical application, the course will encourage you to grow as a visual artist broadening your influences and refining your perspective.

HOW YOU WILL LEARN:

Through tutorials, our faculty will guide you to develop a sophisticated approach to shaping and communicating your ideas. We will help you develop the skills to ensure they land with impact and engage with new audiences in the world around them – and give you the confidence to exhibit & publish work that is uniquely yours.

Whether you prefer the convenience of online learning, the interactive experience of on-campus classes, or the hands-on exploration of on-location work, exploring our campus workshops, our program has something to offer you. Collaboration - Additionally, you can participate in activities alongside peers enrolled in other MA art programs, fostering collaboration & interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

In this course, you will: Utilise our state-of-the-art digital studio facilities, equipped with the latest photography and video production software and hardware, available on both Mac and PC platforms.

Take advantage of various platforms to exhibit your work professionally, such as the final MA exhibition & other graduate showcases. Access the technical resources and facilities, including our printmaking studio, 3D workshop, audio-visual store, photography darkrooms, editing suites, and more. All of our technical demonstrators are active designers, makers or performers in their own right;- sharing their passion for their disciplines with our students and passing on their knowledge and expertise.

Receive instruction from academic practitioners renowned in their respective fields, who have showcased their work through national and international publications and exhibitions, actively engaging in practice-oriented research.
