As postgraduate student Eunice Akapabey reaches the final stages of her MSc Environmental Management, she is able to reflect on her achievements and her student life at Liverpool Hope University.
'My motivation and drive stems from my father. Before I had decided to come and study in the UK my father sadly passed away, but his encouragement for me to continue my studies, and his belief in me influenced my decision to take a leap of faith and move to the UK.
'I spent a lot of time researching the UK and speaking to friends and family who had travelled. My mother’s friend knew Liverpool very well and he was able to give me lots of useful information about the city, which helped with my decision to apply to Liverpool Hope.
'I also applied to universities in London, but the price of the MSc at £6,800 and the support that I received from Hope was fantastic. Following my initial application I received a very quick response. I decided Hope was the university for me in August and in September I was on a plane to the UK.
'Although I did research about studying abroad, nothing can prepare you for the adventure, it really is beyond our imagination. The weather is cold – very different from Africa – and at first it was hard being so far away from home. But living on campus enabled me to quickly make friends with so many fellow students.
'The MSc Environmental Management course content strongly appealed as it offered lots of different opportunities. The move from undergraduate to postgraduate studies is a big leap; you are taught research methods and are given the freedom to choose your own research topic. It is a challenging shift, but definitely rewarding in the long term.
'In addition my new life at Liverpool Hope University, I got to know the large African community in Liverpool, through my local church. This is really, truly my home!'
