In my view...

Mia Liguori is studying for the Master in European Business (MEB) at ESCP-EAP...

'I came to ESCP-EAP after completing a BA in European Studies at King’s College London because I wanted to learn more about Europe and the political, economic and social issues relating to it. As part of my BA, I spent a year in Berlin, and it was this experience which really showed me that I wanted to live and work overseas after graduating. I have had quite an international upbringing, so my outlook is also international. This has definitely influenced my choice of studies.

'When I entered my final year at King’s College, I was pretty unsure about what I really wanted to do next, and at that point in time I had no real knowledge of business practice or management. I felt that the business route was something I would be suited to, and after researching lots of different courses focusing on this field of study, I finally came across a programme that seemed to be made specifically for me. Not only did it allow me to study all aspects of business management, it also offered me the option to do this both at home in the UK and internationally. That course was the MEB at ESCP-EAP.

'The MEB is a one-year, two-country programme, with a complementary internship, so it offered the exact mix of theory and practice I was looking for. You can study on any of the School’s five campuses, or, alternatively, you can study in Mexico and India. I chose to spend my first semester at the School’s Berlin campus, and then transferred to the London campus for the remainder of the year. The first semester proved fairly challenging because it was the first time I had studied business in German, but it was invaluable for my language skills. I’d also like to say that the School helped me to integrate really well with the other students, so I settled in well and quickly.

'In London, my experience has been different from Berlin, but in a good way. The campus here is really multicultural, with a healthy mix of students from all over the world. This has provided me with a brilliant range of differing perspectives on business and served as a useful addition to what I am learning on the course. This semester, I’m studying in English, which is obviously a lot easier for me. But you shouldn’t think that the programme is only for people with multiple language skills: there are many streams taught entirely in English, which, as you’d imagine, attract a diverse mix of people from a wide range of countries.

'At the moment, I’ve just secured my internship and will be returning to Germany to complete this. I’ll be working in marketing at Beiersdorf in Hamburg. The School has been incredibly supportive in helping us to find internships, and each campus has a company and alumni relations team providing tips, advice, contacts and leads. We also have to complete a live consultancy project each semester for added practical experience.

'Just as you’d expect, the MEB is hard work, but it’s well worth the effort. I would recommend it to anyone who responds well to a challenge and who is looking for a hands-on approach to both business and management. If you enjoy working in an international environment and aren’t afraid of a bit of work hard, the programme at ESCP-EAP could to be the perfect fit for you too.'
