Nancy Macharia, 45, is really pleased to be studying a PhD in E-learning Requirements for Higher Education at Bournemouth University, and is delighted to have been awarded a Postgrad Solutions Study Bursary.

‘At my age, it is sometimes difficult to meet the criteria for sponsorship by most institutions. Bournemouth Nancy likes Bournemouth University because it has a good community of both staff and students. She explains, ‘I was given a personal welcome and orientation to facilities and procedures. My two supervisors are extremely helpful both in my research work and in ensuring that I remain focused on my studies.’

Talking about her chosen institution, Nancy says, ‘It seems to me that BU is a growing international institution offering high quality education, research, with a genuine focus on enterprise and professional practice. I am impressed by BU’s record on student employability upon completion of their studies.’

Nancy likes the university’s equal opportunities policy and the fact that there are students studying there from all over the world. She explains, ‘The university uses an equal opportunities policy which demonstrates commitment  to give equal opportunities  and treatment to all students on the basis of their relevant merits and abilities. No prospective student or enrolled student receives less favourable treatment on any grounds which are not relevant to academic ability or attainment.

Nancy is a mother-of-two from Kenya where she’s an Assistant Lecturer in Information Technology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She is also the Deputy Director in the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology. At Bournemouth University Nancy is registered in the Department of Software Systems where she is doing a PhD in E-learning requirements for Higher Education.

Nancy chose to study in the UK for several reasons. She explains, ‘I love reading, travelling and I am an ICT and marketing enthusiast, hence, an urge to study for a PhD.’ She continues, ‘UK universities are committed to providing quality education and thus invest in research facilities.’
