Postgraduate Programmes in Art

Postgraduate Programmes in Art will give students expertise in a wide range of art topics, from traditional drawing and painting, through to the more modern digital imaging and special effects. For example, an MA in Fine Art is likely to include a multitude of art disciplines, from painting and sculpture to video and live art. Many UK universities have fantastic art schools attached to them, boasting good facilities and teachers who are also practicing artists.

Due to the nature of the subject, Master’s in Art are usually taught programmes rather than research based, and are often available to study both as a full-time, one-year programme, or as a two-year, part-time course. This category also encompasses Performing Arts those in which the body is used to express the artistic meaning, like drama, music and dance.

Postgraduate Programmes in Design

Postgraduate Programmes in Design can range through many different design specialities, from Textile Design (for example the MA in Textile Design, Fashion and Management at the University of Manchester) through to Interior Design (the University of Westminster has a good offering!) or even web design (like the course at Birkbeck, University of London).

Entry to Postgraduate Programmes in Art and Design

Successful applicants will generally be expected to hold a good bachelor degree (second-class Honours or above) from a recognised institution. However, in some instances and exceptional non-graduate may be considered for postgraduate study, so check with your preferred institution to see exactly what qualifications are required.

English Language Requirements

IELTS scores of 6.5–7.0 or TOEFL scores of 100-107 are usually needed. Because of ongoing changes in the law we advise international students to regularly check the UKBA website to make sure they can fulfil the necessary requirements. Most individual institutions also have useful information on the Tier 4 requirements for international students, and can offer assistance in terms of student queries about their specific English language requirements.

How much will it cost?

Average fees for UK and EU students are likely to range from about £3,500 to £8,000 for an MA, or more for vocational programmes. Rates of around £9,000–£13,000 are common for non-EU students, although a few universities now give the home rate to all students. Check individual prospectuses, as there are usually bursaries for each department. International scholarships are also available on a limited basis. Students on research-based programmes are often able to obtain awards, especially at MPhil/PhD level.
