Programme: MBA International
Having gained considerable experience as a manager in Taiwan, Yao Feng Yeh decided to join the Portsmouth MBA to enhance his career prospects.
"The course is very interesting and encourages active involvement and debate. I enjoy working within a multicultural group and exchanging ideas and knowledge. The Maastricht residential conference was an extremely valuable experience including lectures from top academics, interesting workshops and organisational/industrial visits.
"The Portsmouth Business School offers excellent facilities for MBA students and has a great reputation for academic, research and quality excellence. The state-of-the art equipment facilitates learning, and the teaching environment is wonderful. Support services like the Academic Skills Unit (ASK) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) are a great help.
"I have been to many cities around the UK, but I have found Portsmouth to be the best city in which to live and study. The people are friendly, the weather is great and the landscape is wonderful. The University’s location within the city is very convenient and everything is within easy reach. Shops, restaurants, student accommodation and the seafront are only a ten-minute walk from the main teaching facilities.
"The support I received from the International Office when I first arrived was great and the orientation programme gave me the opportunity to get to know the city and make many friends.
Name: Stephanie Mergen
Age: 24
Home country: Germany
Institution: University of Portsmouth
Programme: MEng in Civil Engineering
Stephanie Mergen completed her first degree in Germany and switched to Portsmouth to complete her Master’s in Civil Engineering. The desire to live by the sea helped bring her to England and now the threat of floods and finding ways to keep water at bay is inspiring her studies.
"In my first degree I specialised in water and environment management. I am very interested in the environment, natural water cycles, the supply of water and rainwater treatment, so I decided to write my dissertation for my master’s on this.
"I am doing research and testing for a Manchester-based company on developing permeable pavements which prevent flooding and which also contain microorganisms that ‘clean’ pollutants from the water. My work involves testing different products to use under the block paving surface to collect and store water and filter it to remove harmful metals and oil washed into drains from cars.
"It’s important to find a solution to increased rainfall and risk of flooding, as well as ways to help combat the entry of pollutants from vehicles into drains and waterways. Permeable pavements are already used in many cities across Europe, but my research and testing aims to help advance the science of collecting water and make such a system self-cleaning and self-sustaining.
"Once I graduate, I hope to stay in the UK and get a job where I can gain more industry experience.
