"Having been brought up in a family where education and personal ethics have been given utmost importance, it was always my dream to pursue my higher education away from home, where individual development and progressive experience were the end outcomes. With this motive in mind, I chose to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration at The Leicester Business School.

There were quite a few reasons which helped me in making this important decision. Leicester is considered to be the most culturally diversified city in the whole of the United Kingdom. Not only did this give me a chance to be a part and parcel of so many different lifestyles from close proximity, but also gave me the motive of living and learning life all on my own. It was all fun and frolics staying in a hostel with so many students, where each day brought along with it, a new smile and a new story to tell.

As soon as I enrolled for the course in September 2003, I knew for a fact that the next 12 months were going to be a really enriching experience and would be embedded within me for the rest of my life. The quality of the professors taking lectures was of the highest possible order. The involvement of my whole batch in each session made it all the more enterprising. For most of us who came from India, things like individual assignments and group assessed work were something new, yet fresh from the way we used to study in India. Even if we made mistakes, there was always someone around to teach us the right approach.

During the holidays I made a short trip to Europe where I explored the world of France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Netherlands. This gave me an insight into the galaxy called ‘Europe’. Despite all the fun, my focus was always centred on doing a good dissertation which was the most important ingredient of my entire higher education. To write a thesis on a topic of our choice after having gathered data, analysing and assimilating it, is not everyone’s cup of tea. Though scared in the beginning, I got proper guidance from Mr Alan Murphy who was always a constant source of inspiration and a guiding light at that. Now that I reflect back on my stay in UK, I only wish that such dreams never end.

A few months after I came back to India, I joined the small scale detergent and allied products manufacturing industry, run by my uncle, as a sales and marketing manager. I started work from scratch and over the past few months have learnt a lot about the FMCG industry in India and its relationship with the end-users of its products i.e. the customers. My work includes a lot of travelling with different members of the sales force to different parts of the State on a daily basis, return to the head office and discuss events unfolding during the day and plan the future course of action. Constant monitoring of the activities taking place in the factory and HR recruitment also fall under my purview at times.

Constant vigil is the motto of the kind of work we are expected to do with hardcore competition and jostling for market share taking place all the time."
