Nicholas Dobson Name: Nicholas Dobson

Institution: Swansea University
Programme: MA Translation with Language Technology

“With the University right on the beachfront and the Gower Peninsula on your doorstep, there are plenty of good reasons to choose Swansea!”

Nicholas Dobson, from Sheffield, completed his first degree in French and English at Swansea University. His MA in Translation with Language Technology will allow him to fulfil his ambition to work in the field of professional translation.

"I decided to pursue a postgraduate course because I wanted to use my language skills in my future profession. My MA covers translation theory together with the practical use of translation software.

"I chose Swansea because, whilst many universities offer translation courses, very few teach the technological aspect of modern day translation - the use of machine translation and computer assisted translation. These tools help to speed up translating and make translations more consistent and ‘complete’, which is essential for the world of professional translation.

"The facilities in my department are excellent: Postgraduate students have free access to scanning and printing facilities, and the language labs contain state-of-the-art specialist language software.

"I received a Taught Masters Bursary worth £1,500 from the University which helped to pay my tuition fees, and I have already secured a six-month position as a translation intern with a company in Brussels when my course finishes. This qualification means that I could work as an in-house translator, a terminologist, a project manager organising translation projects, or even work freelance.

"My experience at Swansea has certainly been a positive one - Swansea is a friendly place which offers vibrant city life together with a village culture. In addition, with the University right on the beachfront and the Gower Peninsula on your doorstep, there are plenty of good reasons to choose Swansea!"

Kate Howell Name: Kate Howell
Age: 34
Home country: UK
Institution: Swansea University
Programme: Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course

“I opted for Swansea University because of its excellent reputation, first-rate facilities and attractive location”

Kate Howell, from Walsall, was an archaeologist for ten years before opting to re-train in Law. She excelled in both her Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course at Swansea University and has now been offered a training contract with a large regional law firm.

"After working as an archaeologist for ten years, I decided that I wanted a career change, and the one-year Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) offered a relatively quick way of retraining for a legal career, without the need to do another three-year degree.

"Following my GDL, I undertook the Legal Practice Course (LPC) which teaches the skills and knowledge required to practice as a solicitor. All of Swansea’s LPC tutors have worked as solicitors or barristers and their experiences were invaluable in illustrating topics and giving an insight into the world of legal practice.

"I opted for Swansea University because of its excellent reputation, first-rate facilities and attractive location, and I have really enjoyed the experience. I’ve relished the challenge of learning a new subject, practicing new skills and making new friends. Although there has been a short-term cost, I am confident of the long term benefits, both financially and in terms of job satisfaction.

"During my GDL I undertook a vacation placement with the firm Morgan Cole, after which I was invited to an assessment day and interview. They covered the cost of my LPC and offered me a training contract. Postgraduate study has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to retrain and take my career in a different direction - I’ll be sorry to leave University, but am really excited about starting my new job and commencing my legal career!"
