5 Types of People You'll Meet on an LLM course

Have you already started preparing luggage for the new LLM semester beginning next September? If not, don't wait any longer! Take advantage of those clearance sales in your home jurisdictions and shop for all-weather clothes that you would need, especially if you will be studying in the UK! Now that you have your offer in hand and are eagerly looking forward to starting your LLM program, you must also be wondering who you will first meet when you set foot on campus. Well, from my recent experience as an LLM student last year, here’s a list of the people I feel you will most likely meet on your first day of school.

1. The Lawyers: If you are on a program with modules on Intellectual Property, Competition Law or Commercial Arbitration, you will almost certainly come across students leaning into their Mac books-err lawyers taking a year off from practising in their home jurisdiction! This probably explains why some are dressed in Burberry and other completely-out-of-your-budget trends. But don’t worry, it won’t be long before they turn casual once they realise they are just students like anyone else! Whilst they may tend to flaunt their contract negotiation skills while trying to impress course tutors, you'll find their pre-existing networks very handy if you can befriend them!

2. The Navigators: You are sure to find the occasional international student engrossed in their mobile phones while they continued talking to you in serious tones about their course choices. Even if your college tour guide lost their way while showing you around city landmarks, this student will most likely guide them through their acquired use of smartphones. Definitely could prove useful on quick weekend trips or while exploring downtown restaurants - especially if they're in full-on tourist mode, seeking out all the best hidden gems of your city !

3. The Pub crawlers: On your first day, if you were asked to accompany someone for a drink either in your residence halls or on campus while you were on a library tour, and accepted, then you know you are going to be friends-for-life! Although let’s be candid, these pleasures will come with a cost so add the Navigator to your party and take advantage of their superhuman abilities to find cheap and fascinating pubs rather than the mainstream bankrupting fare.

4. The unavoidable chatty geeks: You will always bump into these characters- there’s no avoiding the occasional humdrum conversation on LLM topics at cafes or library corners. They are most likely to unnerve your attention with their potential PhD topics and how difficult it was for them to get the full scholarship to do the LLM. Just be patient, and try instead to make the conversation meaningful for yourself by seeking advice on the right reference books or dissertation help. After all - they're practically a walking library, so if you can stand their enthusiasm, you'll love them all the more at exam time.

5. The Foodies!

If you found yourself drawn to conversations about finding a ‘good place for sushi’ or ‘organic take-out’, you're probably a foodie. If not, you can spot them from their loud recommendations of some quaint local place that serves up an obscure, but delightful, dish.  Often found in a group alongside the Navigator and the Lawyers, these are a great way to try something new.
