Founded in 1838 as Britain's first polytechnic, Westminster has locations in central London and Harrow well-served by transport links.

It is also a leading modern university for research in Art and Design (including Music), Asian Studies (Chinese), Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Electronic Engineering, Law, Linguistics, and Politics and International Relations. More than 800 teaching staff are supported by up to 800 visiting specialists and tutors to provide high quality higher education and research in both national and international contexts.

The University has very high ratings for courses in Arabic, building, housing and surveying, Chinese, communication and media (including music), French, integrated health, politics and international relations, psychology, subjects allied to medicine and tourism. Professional accreditation is offered in all core disciplines. Quality learning and research is designed in partnership with businesses to meet the needs of London's international economy.

The University has more than 20,000 students - 25 per cent at postgraduate level. Over 5,000 international students attend from over 150 countries.

The RAE 2008 results, announced in December 2008, confirmed Westminster's position as a leading modern University with an outstanding record of achievement in research. In the Res Highlights include:

• Almost 80 per cent of our submitted research across 20 subject areas was judged to be of international quality (2 star and above)
• World leading (4 star) and internationally excellent (3 star) status for the majority of our research in Media and Communication; Art and Design; and Architecture and the Built Environment.
• International quality recognition (2-star) for the majority of our work submitted in Law; Life and Health Sciences; Computing; Business and Management; Town and Country Planning; Environmental Studies and others.

Recent/prospective new builds

• The University is investing heavily in its buildings and recreational facilities.
• P3, at the University's Marylebone Campus is a vast underground exhibition space that has hosted events during London Fashion Week, the launch of Architecture Week and student degree shows. A programme of events, Ambika at P3 brings together artists, architects and creative practitioners from across the capital.
• London Gallery West at our Harrow Campus exhibits contemporary media, art and design work.
• In 2010 the University opened The Gallery, a major new art and exhibition space at the University's headquarters at 309 Regent Street. This provides a showcase for students and established artists, as well as a venue for debates and events.
• Work is now well underway on the £38.5m redevelopment of our Harrow Campus, home to state-of-the-art film and television studios, computer technology, broadcast equipment and music studios which are among the best media and creative arts educational facilities in Europe. Work was recently completed on the multi-million pound refurbishment of our Life Sciences laboratories at our Cavendish Campus, while a multi-million pound refurbishment is also underway at our Marylebone Campus.
