“Having been exposed to lot of universities, my learning experience at Cardiff Met has proven to be superb, very positive and highly recommendable to anyone looking to pursue further education. The University played a significant and important role in fulfilling educational and professional aspirations. My motivation had remained high and I had found it easy to maintain a high interest in my major. The school is excellent, Cardiff is a fabulous city and the people are simply fantastic. The University offers new facilities and lots of highly qualified professors. The curriculum is very relevant and interesting, giving me the experience necessary to quickly adapt and progress in my workplace.

I was initially attracted because of the University's reputation in this field, which was subsequently endorsed by the quality of the courses, excellent facilities and inspiring lecturers. If you are hoping to acquire specialised knowledge and a wide range of skills in a friendly and dynamic study environment within a multicultural community, Cardiff Met is the right place for you – just imagine how this will help you in the future.”

Name: Vijaya Kumar Venkatesh
Home Country: India
Course at Cardiff Met:  MSc Advanced Product Design

Vijaya, from Tamil Nadu, gained a first-class degree in mechanical engineering in 2003 and then joined Shanthi Gears Ltd as an apprentice. He was an engineer in the tool design, research and development department at Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd from 2004 to 2007, before coming to the UK to study at Cardiff Metropolitan.

“I chose to study at Cardiff Met because it has a good reputation for product design courses. MSc students have their own separate room and workshop and also have access to the 24-hour information technology facilities. I get to interact with students from different backgrounds and countries and benefit from their different views and experiences. The course is really well organised and the tutors have a broad range of experience in different fields.

A typical project will involve hand-drawing and making prototypes to explore my ideas. The Professional Development module helped me to analyse my strengths and weaknesses and improve my portfolio. For my major project I will design a new product incorporating my knowledge from the previous taught modules. Finally, the industrial placement will allow me to gain hands-on industrial experience during a ten-week placement. Apart from the University and course, the thing that I enjoy most is the city. Cardiff is a nice place to live, the people are friendly, the environment is calm and the city is very green. I have really enjoyed myself in Cardiff.

After completing my course in Cardiff Met, I hope to find employment in the research and development departments in the automotive manufacturing industries. I am sure I have a bright future and lots of opportunities ahead of me.”

Home Country: Jordan
Course at Cardiff Met: PhD Dental Technology

Noor joined Cardiff Metropolitan in 2010 having previously worked as a lecturer at Jordan University of Science and Technology. Once Noor completes her PhD  Dental Technology, she will return to J.U.S.T to continue her teaching and lecturing.

“I was lucky to have previously met one of my future supervisors at a conference we both attended. He was very helpful and gave me all the details of the course of which I was interested in. I like the separate room for the PhD students with all the kitchen facilities. I soon found myself involved in a group of lovely friends and they have been keen to help me and I like to help them. This help has been priceless and so I have avoided becoming isolated as a PhD student. I have met many local Welsh and English people during my first few months and from my experiences I feel that they will be friends for life.

I really enjoy the Academic Associate Committee for the PhD students that organize events all through the year. I like to be involved as an international representative in the committee. We try to raise the international student’s problems to the CMU.

Cardiff is a wonderful city ‘capital of Wales’, very beautiful and the living expenses are favourable. It is close to the main shopping centre and there are many free events throughout the year such as “The big gig” and “The party in the park”. I have been to many museums such as St Fagans and the not to be missed “Big Pit” what a day out that was! I still have lots of things on my list to tick off whilst in Cardiff. Since arriving in Cardiff I have done many things for the first time and this could have been daunting but with the right help and guidance it has never been a problem.

The cycle routes are fantastic I now have my own bike which I use at the weekends, the University sports and fitness facilities are second to none and my local swimming pool is perfectly situated for me. In truth Cardiff is fantastic and I Love it!!!”

Name:  Mojisola Olagoke
Home Country:  Nigeria
Course at Cardiff Met:  MSc Hospitality Management

Moji joined Cardiff Met after working at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos for over 8 years. Her decision to undertake the MSc course was to allow her to become a qualified Hotel Manager and consultant.  Moji hopes to also gain experience of the UK hospitality industry before returning to Nigeria.

“Coming to Cardiff Metropolitan was a totally new and positive experience for me. In the beginning it was rigorous nonetheless and I have experienced new ways of learning through practical application of knowledge; group work, group discussion, group assignment, critical thinking and evaluating organisational issues and policies, working in groups of people with different background, culture and attending workshops.

The learning environment is also very conducive and the management building is fantastic!

It was very easy for me to relocate to Cardiff and I received a warm welcome from the international office team when I arrived on campus-they are all very helpful and professional. I will not forget the free Sim card given that enabled me to contact my love ones back in Nigeria and let them know that I am fine and in good hands. The tutors were all very nice and ever willing to help.

I would like to gain a few years work experience in the UK and may even continue my studies by undertaking a PhD here.”

Name:  Jaewoong Yun
Home Country: South Korea
Course at Cardiff Met: MSc Management

Jaewoong (James) joined Cardiff Met in 2011, having previously worked in South Korea as an English translator. James chose the MSc Management course to help develop his management skills, which he plans to use in a career within sports retail management, where he hopes to build business links between Korea and the UK.

“I first came to know this university through a UK university exhibition in South Korea in 2009. After making the tuition fee, I finally came to this lovely Cardiff city and University in June in 2011. When I look back upon the moment that I arrived at Cardiff and first saw my university, my mind is filled with the unforgettable impression and appreciation. I can not describe how happy I was when I first looked around my management building with international office staff. After I studied pre-sessional course at ELTC (English Learning Training Centre) at the University, I began my MSc Management course.

I have met many lovely and kind staff members, teachers and students at this university and, particularly, as an international student, I really would like to recommend Cardiff Met to other international students who are thinking about studying in the UK.  Lastly, if you want to experience much higher academic study and a great campus with a diverse mix of people, I would strongly recommend you pick Cardiff Metropolitan University.”
