University of Sunderland ranked best new university in the North East
The Guardian University Guide has ranked the University of Sunderland the best new university in the North-East for the second year running.
In the Guardian University Guide 2012, the University of Sunderland was placed fourth nationally among new universities
The Guardian University Guide is recognised as one of the most relevant and comprehensive measures of higher education provision in the UK.
Sunderland is one of only four post-1992 universities to get into the top 50 in these rankings.
University of Sunderland Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Fidler, says, "The rise in the Guardian rankings is very pleasing indeed. It is down in large part to the strong student experience at Sunderland, which was highlighted last year when we received the Times Higher Student Experience Award. Not only do Sunderland students receive a very good higher education - we have the highest possible quality ratings - they also receive the life skills and work experience that makes them very attractive to employers. The Guardian University Guide understands very well the experience of a modern day student, so it is extremely reassuring to know that we are attuned to their expectations and needs."
Professor Fidler continues, "The higher education sector is facing a challenging time with the Government enforced tuition fees rise and substantial cut to the teaching grant. However, Sunderland has been working hard over the past two years to ensure it is well placed to deal with what pressures may lay ahead."
The rankings within the guide were created using areas such as feedback and assessment, teaching quality, students overall satisfaction, career prospects and staff-student ratio.
Over the past few years the University of Sunderland has spent over £130m to ensure that its facilities are of the highest standards, and the latest additions include CitySpace, a £12m sports facility, and the £8.5m Sciences Complex.
