University of Portsmouth architecture students exhibit in London
A group of students from the School of Architecture at the University of Portsmouth are exhibiting their final year diploma show at a London gallery.
The Dreamspace Gallery is hosting designs by around a dozen final year diploma students, including plans for a children’s refuge in Morocco's Atlas Mountains and the revitalisation of the historic neighbourhood of Es Jonquet in Palma de Mallorca. There are also proposals for the Hilsea Lido in Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight Zoo and Burseldon Brickworks.
The show displays a range of representational techniques such as photography and models, illustrating the School of Architecture’s diverse approach to the subject from concept to detailed design.
Alistair Barr, Director of Barr Gazetas architecture practice, said: "I have huge admiration for the initiative of the 12 students who arranged this diploma showcase. To me being an architect is about making things happen, often against the odds. They have demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to their chosen profession and the diversity of presentation techniques and range of design approaches were notable. I especially enjoyed the central ‘model island.’ To any practice who is contemplating hiring part 2 students I would say this exhibition is an essential place to visit."
The private view on Thursday 7th July drew over 100 guests including architecture professionals and journalists from industry magazines who joined family, friends, tutors and alumni. Dean of the Faculty, Simon Claridge who attended Thursday’s private view, said, “We’re always striving to support the professional development of our students, especially through new initiatives such as a first time show in London. I’ve been extremely impressed at the level of professionalism and quality of work on show which clearly illustrates the breadth and depth of work undertaken during the course.”
The exhibition is open to the public from 9am until 5.30 Monday to Friday until Friday 22nd July with free admission.
Location: Dreamspace Gallery, 1-3 Dufferin Street, London EC1Y 8NA.
