Student satisfaction
We are proud of our teaching record, receiving the highest possible rating in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency audit. The 2010 National Student Survey places Portsmouth within the top 25 mainstream English universities for overall satisfaction with 85 per cent of full-time students reporting being satisfied or very satisfied with their course, higher than the national average of 82 per cent.
Applications to Portsmouth increased by 20 per cent (28,448) in 2010 and by 26 per cent (23,632) in 2009 and we received a 13 per cent increase in research funding following success in last year’s Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The average increase across the sector was 8 per cent.
Our student services teams are dedicated to all students, regardless of their course, level or mode of study. These include Academic Skills Support, The University Library and our Sport and Recreation facilities.
The University endeavours to provide the best for students. The International Office, including the International Student Advisers, is dedicated to providing support and advice for the University’s overseas students.
Postraduate programmes
Many of our taught Master’s programmes are designed to extend knowledge and in-depth skills in fields you have studied more generally at undergraduate level or equivalent. Others are conversion degrees enabling you to switch specialism to a new area.
The University also offers a portfolio of Master’s programmes available by Distance Learning, for a flexible approach to further study. Similarly, the Learning at Work Programme is a work-based learning programme for busy professionals. It allows working people to study for university qualifications – Bachelors’ and Master's degrees - without leaving their jobs.
Our Research degree programmes enable high quality graduates to study for an MPhil or PhD in a supportive and structured environment. Working alongside active researchers, many of whom have international level reputations, you will not only be supported in making your original contribution to knowledge in your chosen topic, but also be trained in doctoral level skills in many areas of interest to researchers and other employers.
We also offer professional doctorates tailored to the needs of particular professions - an alternative, yet internationally recognised, qualification.
Our postgraduate course fees are set annually and reflect factors such as the type of study involved, the course content, the use made of special equipment and facilities (especially those courses which are laboratory based) and the qualification gained. All the information on postgraduate fees is available on our Academic Registry pages.
Student employability
We are a research-active university. Areas of international excellence include the Institute of Biomedical and Bio-molecular Sciences, the Centre for European and International Research and the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation. Our Research degrees and taught Master’s programmes build on our well-developed strengths in applied research with business, industry and the public and voluntary sectors.
The University has excellent links with industry and a strong record of student employability. Purple Door Careers and Recruitment, our in-house careers and recruitment advisors, help with career planning, searching for job vacancies and work experience opportunities, and improving your employability. This service is available to all current students, and graduates for up to five years. For entrepreneurial students, our Centre for Enterprise supports and mentors students and alumni with their ideas, inventions and business start-ups.
