Research interests include: effects on host behaviour and life history; maternal effects and selection; phylogeography of avian malaria and other blood-borne parasites; the effect of parasites on endangered species; broad-scale ecological relationships between hosts, parasites and vectors; mating systems and extra-pair copulations in birds; physiological and morphological consequences of sperm competition; sperm-egg interactions in birds; insect sperm competition; structure and dynamics of forest communities; interactions between trees and other organisms; evolution of life histories and mimicry in insects; coevolution between plants and insects (especially in pollination); the importance of habitat fragmentation to populations and conservation; the effects of competition and predation on population dynamics, community structure and diversity; the consequences of individual behaviour for animal populations and communities; the influence of population and community processes on the evolution of animal behaviournatural selection, variation and microevolution in natural populations.
