‘I moved to Glasgow from Colorado. Though I did not know anyone, I was instantly welcomed and quickly felt at home. As a city, Glasgow caters to many interests with plenty of things to do. This is the type of city where you feel like you are living, not just visiting. The University itself offers many clubs and societies, providing chances to meet many friendly people. The School of Physics and Astronomy is one of the friendliest and most social departments I have seen and you instantly feel like you belong. There is a wide variety of backgrounds and countries represented, giving an international feel to the environment.’
Erin MacDonald, USA, PhD student School of Physics and Astronomy
‘I chose Glasgow as I heard it was a good university for the degree that I was applying for and I heard great things about the city and the people here. The whole experience is great but I think that ultimately having one of the best universities in the UK on your CV is the best thing and knowing that you are going into the real world knowing as much as possible. The teaching is brilliant, the buildings are beautiful and the city is great.’
Helen Armstrong, UK, PhD Physical Organic Chemistry
‘I first came to Glasgow on the Erasmus exchange programme. I especially liked the practical nature of the postgraduate courses offered at Glasgow. The combination of theory and its application, using industry software, in river engineering, GIS and urban drainage, was particularly useful. Of course, my personal experience of the University was very important in my decision to continue to study here, but the University’s prestige in world ranking terms was important too. I thought the programme was well organised and I really appreciated the chance to do an experimental study for my major project work. Glasgow itself is a great city, with all the museums, concerts and social life that you would expect, and the people are friendly too.’
Elisa Vignaga, Engineering MSc graduate
‘After completing my honours degree in Toronto, I sought out an international Masters program from a leading UK university that would allow me to specialize in Cancer Research. The MRes in Molecular Medicine here at the University of Glasgow seemed to offer just this, but I soon realised that it offered far more than I had ever expected. I was immediately impressed with the high quality of the program, reputable faculty and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. I was given the opportunity to become a vital part of two research teams where I conducted my own projects led by the group’s leader and supervised by post-doctoral fellows. More than anything, it was the supervisors’ excitement about their relative fields that led me to desire to build an expanding knowledge and understanding of cancer, and hopefully help identify future treatments of a disease that affects so many.’
Milica Vukovic, MRes Molecular Medicine
‘It was September 2008 when I first arrived here in Glasgow and the time clock has run so fast since then. Being an international student, it was a difficult task from the very beginning to get adjusted to a completely new environment. The friendly and co-operative environment at Glasgow, both at the University and socially, surprised me and this made it so easy to get on board with the routine life. I have had a fantastic time in the College so far with an excellent academic and administrative supervision. During my studies, I got various chances to present my research at both national and international conferences. My supervisor has supported me all the way through my studies and the Graduate School has provided their best support in making my studies as smooth as possible. Training courses run by the Graduate school not only provided me an opportunity to build my personal skills but also will help me in establishing my career. I am sure that after I finish my PhD, I am going to miss the student life at Glasgow a lot.’
