MSc Career Guidance

Studying at Glamorgan helped me to develop both professionally and on a personal level. I became aware of skills I didn’t know I had, and acquired new ones. Three different work placements gave me a lot of the knowledge, skills and experience needed to enter the profession with pride and self-confidence. Over time I grew more confident in my abilities to present to a group of people and was given the opportunity to be a group leader.

The lecturers have a lot of experience and were always extremely friendly, helpful and supportive. My fellow classmates contributed to my learning, development and overall experience, too. I was lucky that they were all really interesting and great people, which helped with team tasks and projects.

The University is quite large with hundreds of students, but on campus you never feel overwhelmed or that it is too crowded. Another bonus is its proximity to Cardiff, where I was living at the time, so getting to and from lectures was quick and affordable and helped keep my costs down.

One of Glamorgan’s strengths is that it constantly strives to improve the employability skills of its students and graduates, and prepares them for entry into the labour market. In my case, as soon as I finished the course, I started work as a Post-16 Community Personal Adviser for the Connexions Service in Uxbridge. I have been in post for almost two years now and I have to say that my training at Glamorgan provided me with the skills and experience needed to do this job well – things like networking with other professionals and agencies, investigative and research skills, organising and planning for formal presentations, organising practical interviewing and group work sessions as a team, and liaising with local schools.

Glamorgan proved to be the springboard that launched my career into career guidance. And I can honestly say that it was the most enjoyable experience I’ve had as a student in higher education.
