University of Exeter helps secure England victory

Victory in the European hockey competition has been secured by England’s Senior Men’s Indoor Hockey Squad which is managed by the University of Exeter’s Assistant Director of Sport responsible for Performance and Competition.

Nick Beasant has just returned with the winning team from the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Trophy, held in Poznan, Poland. The England team beat Sweden in the final to secure the converted European trophy. The winning team also had representation from Henry Eriksson a University of Exeter Sports Science graduate and current PGCE student.

Victory in Poznan means that England qualify for the first ever Indoor World Cup in 2011 and England’s success also means that they will compete in the top tier of European indoor hockey in 2012.

The England squad always believed they could secure promotion going into the final match. Nick Beasant said, 'Deep down we knew we could beat Sweden, it’s a tremendous achievement for the entire squad but one that we thoroughly deserve.'

Nick Beasant was able to put his international indoor experience to good use recently when he successfully led the University of Exeter indoor team to the final of the England Hockey National Division Two South competition in Hull on the weekend of 22nd January.

In the more prominent outdoor version of the sport, the University of Exeter’s Men’s 1st team will compete in the very highest level of English hockey, National Premier 1. The league began again on Sunday 7th February.
