Department Profile: Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies

University of Edinburgh
College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine

College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, University of EdinburghThe College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at The University of Edinburgh is one of the oldest centres of its kind in the United Kingdom, yet one of the most dynamic and progressive. It has a long-held international reputation for excellence in medical and veterinary medical research and teaching. Its approach ranges from molecules to man, from bench to bedside, from process to population - and from 'lab to labrador'. Research programmes within the College explicitly link biomedicine and veterinary medicine, in promotion of the concept "One Medicine".

The College offers a broad range of postgraduate programmes aimed at graduates from a variety of backgrounds, from medicine and veterinary medicine to the biological sciences. Many of our Masters programmes are taught part-time by online distance learning, allowing you to balance study with work and personal commitments. Research is organised into international-standard, interdisciplinary centres of excellence, which are united within four Schools:

• Biomedical Sciences
• Clinical Sciences and Community Health
• Molecular and Clinical Medicine
• Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies

The College attracts research income in excess of £50 million a year and is actively involved in the commercialisation of research. Most postgraduate research studentships are funded by charities, UK research councils and government bodies, industry, commerce and the European Union.

Excellence
In the last UK Research Assessment Exercise (2008), three quarters of the College’s Research staff were in Units rated 5 or 5*. Clinical Medicine was rated top of 28 UK submissions, while Veterinary Medicine was also placed first among the seven UK clinical veterinary schools.

The University of Edinburgh itself is a leading postgraduate teaching and research centre, ranked as one of the world’s top 20 universities in The Times Higher Education World Rankings 2009.
