University of Edinburgh
Influencing the world since 1583
The University of Edinburgh currently hosts more than 6,000 postgraduate students (approximately 1300 are online learners) who study across some 100 disciplines, the University attracts the greatest minds from across the globe, reflecting its position as one of the world’s leading universities. The University has started its ambitious drive to creating a postgraduate community of around 10,000 online learners in 10 years. This is central to the University’s strategy that there is wider, global access to our world-class postgraduate opportunities.
Since it’s foundation more than 400 years ago, our people and their achievements have rewritten history time and again. They’ve explored space, revolutionised surgery, published era-defining books, paved the way for life-saving medical breakthroughs and introduced to the world many inventions, discoveries and ideas from penicillin to Dolly the sheep. They have believed that anything is possible.
Our experts continue in that tradition, consistently striving to uncover the unknown, transforming science fiction into fact, and unveiling new possibilities for future generations.
Our achievements in the recent past alone will lead to improvements in the health, environment and technology sectors.
- Discovered a gene that could help explain how people learn language
Discovered how to produce liver cells specific to certain ethnic groups, potentially revolutionising drug treatments- Invented a molecular device that could lead to the creation of futuristic, super-fast quantum computers
- Invented new methods to improve the tracking of earthquakes
- Developed a licensing policy that seeks to make life-saving medicines more accessible in the developing world
- Developed innovative online medical teaching methods to help train medical students in developing nations
