University of Chester to host prestigious health and social care conference

Rt Hon Beverley Hughes MP, Minister of State for Children, Young People and Families, has been invited to join academics from across the UK and beyond at the anticipated Conference, entitled Stepping Up: meeting the challenge of education and research today. The Conference will take place on April 7, 2009 on the University’s Chester campus. Attendees will hear from a wide range of health and social care professionals and they will have the opportunity to engage with a host of issues affecting this critical area of academia.

Professor Mike Thomas, Dean of the University of Chester’s Faculty of Health and Social Care, will act as chairman of the Conference. He commented: 'This event aims to support health and social care academics in their career development and will explore the cultural and regulatory environment within which universities operate.'

Keynote speakers at the Conference will include Professor Paul Stanton, Visiting Professor of Health Reform at the University of Northumbria, whose presentation will focus on cultures, transitions and education. Dr Elisabeth Clark, Deputy Director of the Open University-Royal College of Nursing (OU-RCN) Alliance and Professor Jan Draper, Director of Nursing within the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the Open University, will both be sharing insight on the impact on practice framework within Continuing Professional Education (CPE).

Interactive workshops, which will give delegates the opportunity to explore teaching and research skills, will be offered throughout the day. An exhibition will include a range of resources, books and other materials of interest to healthcare educators.

Professor Thomas added: 'This Conference is an excellent and valuable event for academics in health and social care education, facing the challenge of developing skills in research, publishing, education, and the interface with practice, while negotiating the policies and procedures of higher education.'
