University of Bolton
Diverse and Friendly
The University of Bolton has a student population of around 11,000 located on a small, compact campus close to the town centre.
Being one of the UK’s smaller universities has many advantages, not least of which is that class sizes are correspondingly small. Which means relationships between students and teaching staff are invariably friendly and open and tutors are accessible and approachable, ensuring you get the most from your postgraduate study.
These qualities are reflected in the atmosphere on campus and amongst our diverse student community. This community reflects a broad cross-section of society and we recognise that people with different backgrounds, experiences, skills and attitudes bring fresh ideas and knowledge to their course.
Postgraduate Studies
Of the students at Bolton around 2,000 are studying, full-time or part-time, at postgraduate level.
This includes masters degree students on courses across all of our University Schools; researchers, often carrying out ground-breaking work leading to MPhil and PhD qualifications; PGDE students preparing to teach in the post-compulsory education sector; and those on Professional Development courses supporting their career and personal aspirations.
Continued Development
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, carried out by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2008, research at the University was classed as world-leading and internationally excellent.
These achievements reflect our commitment to excellence and to the continued growth and enhancement of our capabilities.
Recent developments on campus reflect this commitment:
• September 2008 – Social Learning Zone and Students Union bar and offices opened, creating a unique and stimulating space for studying, meeting and relaxing right at the heart of the campus
• refurbishment of design and photography studios creating purpose-built and state-of-the-art facilities
• purchase of new equipment, totalling more than £850,000, at the Institute for Materials Research and Innovation supporting cutting-edge smart materials research
• start of building work on Bolton One, a £30.6 million swimming pool, health and academic centre being built in a joint project between the University, Bolton Council and NHS Bolton
