The Institute of Education has 5 funded research degree opportunities
The Institute of Education, University of London is offering degree opportunities funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
These studentships are only open to Home/EU students. The Institute has five quota awards available for candidates for full and part-time research studentships for admission through a 1+3, or +3 system of training leading to a PhD. The studentships cover the tuition fees, a stipend and limited conference/fieldwork expenses. Competition for studentships is high and the Institute will only submit applications which have been endorsed by the relevant Faculty and the Doctoral School.
The '1' refers to the one-year (two-year part-time) training leading to the Institute's MRes degree in Educational and Social Research and the '3' refers to the 3 years full-time (five years' part-time) registration for the PhD.
1+3 training scheme
If you are a recent graduate and/or if your Master's degree is not ESRC-recognised, you will need to seek funding under the 1+3 training scheme. Candidates apply initially for the Institute's MRes Education and Social Research or the MSc Economics of Education by Friday 5th March 2010.
+3 scheme
If you have already successfully completed (or will have completed by 30th September 2010) an ESRC-recognised Master's course, it may be possible for you to make a case for +3 entry. Candidates need to apply for MPhil/PhD study by Friday 5th March 2010.
If your qualifications are more than five years old, you will be expected to have gained further professional experience in the relevant subject area. The Institute's Doctoral School Office (Room 519) is able to advise if your qualifications meet the criteria. Students with other qualifications will need to clearly state how their qualifications equate with the Postgraduate Training Guidelines criteria.
One of the five quota places has been allocated to the Department of Quantitative Social Science (DoQSS) at the Institute, for postgraduate training in the application of quantitative methods to substantive issues in the social sciences. Further information is available in this document from the DoQSS. Please note that applications for this place are made in exactly the same way as described below.
