Southern art school on the look out for next big thing in fashion!
The University of Southampton’s Winchester School of Art is searching the globe for the next big name in the world of fashion, fashion accessories and fragrances. The art school is launching a new pathway in ‘Luxury Brand Management’ as part of its MA Design programme, which will concentrate on helping students design, develop and market ‘high end’ products for discerning customers.
Programme leader for MA Design (management pathways), Dr. David Birks says, ‘There is a huge array of brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada, available to sophisticated consumers willing to pay a premium for what they see as the very best. The worldwide recession means people value what they buy even more and want it to last and be of the highest quality.
‘The luxury fashion sector is dominated by privately owned companies and is highly competitive and high risk. This pathway will help our students to gain the management skills they will need to succeed in this tough market and develop the right brand, in the right place and at the right time.’
Successful applicants for this pathway will also get first-hand experience of the development of luxury brands on a three-week work placement within a design-led company and spend two weeks studying in European cities with a heritage of design, art and culture.
Dr Birks says, ‘We need the highest calibre of students for this pathway. They will already have three years’ experience of the cut and thrust of the world of work, an eye for quality products and will understand their place in the market.’
In addition to MA Design (Luxury Brand Management), Winchester School of Art is also launching two other new programmes from 2010 - BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing and MA (Design) European pathways in Architectural Design Management, Interior Design Management and Product Design Management, which is jointly delivered at partner institution in Barcelona.
