The 2010 QS University Rankings® have been released and they reveal that the UK is still home to some of the very best universities in the World!

The UK's top universities performed well in the 2010 QS World University Rankings®

In first place is the University of Cambridge. Cambridge hit the headlines this year by becoming the first non-US university to top the QS World University Rankings®, breaking Harvard’s six-year winning streak.

University College London (UCL) is at fourth place, and has retained this position from last year.

Despite being slightly out-performed by UCL over the last couple of years, the University of Oxford is at a very respectable sixth place, and remains one of the most recognizable university names around the world.

Imperial College London is ranked at seventh place. This is a drop of two places from last year when it was fifth, however Imperial actually improved its performance this year in all but one of the measured criteria.

Overall, UK universities are doing exceptionally well. Only the US has more universities in the Top 50, Top 100 or Top 200. Overall there are 51 UK universities in the Top 500, which is the same amount as in 2009.

The 2010 QS University Rankings® underline the excellent international standing of the UK’s leading universities. However, government cuts to university funding, alongside the wider issues affecting the sector in the wake of the global recession, mean there will be even greater pressure on the UK’s universities to maintain their high standards in next year’s QS World University Rankings®.
