Plymouth launches new entrepreneurial MA

Plymouth College of Art has launched a new MA in Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice. The intention is that the institution will welcome artists, designers, crafts and media practitioners from across the South-West region and help them learn how a thrive in the economic recession.

Supported by ArtsMatrix, the leading the skills and enterprise development agency for creative professionals in the South West of England, Plymouth College of Art is aiming to create a new generation of entrepreneurs with genuine ‘creative distinctiveness’.

Alastair Fuad-Luke, Programme Leader for the new MA in Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice explains: ‘The Internet is blurring discipline boundaries, enabling alliances, catalysing collaborations, and adding new dynamic dimensions to creative practice. Competition is emerging from un-expected quarters, from the ‘pro-ams’, smart mobs, crowds (as in ‘crowdsourcing’) and open source collectives. So where can creative practitioners turn for inspiration and guidance?’

In the MA Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice, postgraduate students can acquire core business skills; explore their entrepreneurial potential; forge new creative directions and/or start-up a new enterprise.
Based upon the principles of inter-disciplinary discourse, mutual learning and individual support, students will benefit from opening out and seeing afresh and interrogate the notion of innovation in an ethical, social, environmental and financial framework.

Mr Faud-Luke adds, ‘Complexity is the norm in the Digital Age, where the global:local economies are enabled with Web 2.0 technologies to connect real and virtual enterprises in hybrid re-combinations. Quixotically, this phenomenon of complex connectivity poses a considerable challenge to the Creative Industries while simultaneously providing a gamut of exciting opportunities for practitioners.’

This progressive, cross-disciplinary Masters programme created by Plymouth College of Art received its first students in January 2010.
